The Importance of Proper Fitting Ski Boots
Nothing ruins a great ski day faster than an ill fitting pair of ski boots. If you have ever suffered through a day on the slopes with the wrong boots you know exactly what I mean. There are remedies for most common boot fitting problems available, and often small details cam make a big difference.
For instance, start with the right kind of sock. It shouldn't be to thick and should fit quite snug. Avoid cotton and look for smooth materials that move moisture away from your foot (one with "moisture wicking" properties). Cotton socks tend to bunch up which causes incredible discomfort in no time. Also, cotton socks do not wick the foot's moisture away from the foot, often resulting in clammy or wet feet.
Look at the foot bed inside the boot. It should match the contours of your foot and provide support where you need it. Custom footbeds can solve many boot fit problems by aligning your foot properly inside the boot. A properly aligned foot will not cause excessive pressure on the inside or outside ankle and help both comfort and performance.
If your boot is a bit tight pressure can be relieved in several ways. Ski boot shells can be stretched to add width or height in most areas of the foot and can be punched out in specific areas to provide relief for bone spurs or bunions. Buckles can also be move to loosen or tighten the fit.
If you boot is loose, shims can be added to tighten things up. Pads can also be added to the liner to help reduce the volume. If you are happy with the fit of your current shell, but the liner is worn out, custom liners are available. |
